When to file with Indiana

  • Your carrier-side appeal has been denied (you've exhausted at least one round of internal appeal)
  • The carrier failed to respond to your appeal within their published response window
  • You believe the carrier handled your claim contrary to its own published policy
  • You suspect a pattern of unfair claim-handling practices at this carrier

Note on scope

Indiana publishes one of the clearest timelines in the country: complaints typically processed within 72 hours of receipt; insurance companies have 20 business days to respond in writing to the IDOI. Pet insurance is regulated as property & casualty (P&C). The state DOI accepts pet insurance complaints under the same channel as other P&C / personal lines complaints. Most state forms do not list pet insurance as a named category — select P&C / personal lines / homeowners-or-renters / 'other' and describe the carrier and policy in the free-text complaint body.
